One of the most common questions we get at Bryan Car Care is whether we come to you or whether you bring the car to us. The honest answer is that it depends on what you need done.
Some services work great in your driveway. Others require a shop environment to do properly. And a few can go either way depending on the conditions.
We offer both mobile and shop-based services across Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene, Hayden, Rathdrum, Spokane Valley, and the surrounding area. This post explains which services fall into which category and why, so you can choose the right option for your situation.
Which Detailing Services Can Be Done Mobile?
Mobile detailing works well for maintenance-level services where the primary goal is cleaning and conditioning rather than correcting or protecting. These services do not require specialized lighting, controlled temperatures, or extended cure times.
Our Interior Detailing service is a perfect fit for mobile. We bring everything needed to deep-clean your cabin. Seats, carpets, dashboard, door panels, center console, glass, and every surface get cleaned and conditioned.
Interior work does not depend on outdoor conditions the way paint services do, and most of our mobile interior appointments happen right in your garage or driveway.
Exterior Detailing can also be performed mobile in the right conditions. A proper hand wash, decontamination, and sealant application can be done on-site as long as the vehicle is not in direct sunlight and the temperature is within a reasonable range.
In the summer months across North Idaho, early morning appointments tend to work best for exterior services.
Our Full Detail combines interior and exterior work and can be done mobile when conditions allow. This is our most popular mobile service because it gives you a complete reset without leaving your house. We arrive with our own water, power, and equipment. All you need is a flat surface and reasonable shade.
Which Services Require the Shop?
Anything involving paint correction or ceramic coating needs to happen in our Post Falls shop. There is no way around this, and any detailer who tells you otherwise is either cutting corners or working with products that do not perform at a professional level.
Paint Enhancement involves machine polishing to remove swirl marks, light scratches, and other clear coat defects. This process requires controlled lighting to see the defects accurately. Our shop uses LED inspection lights that reveal imperfections invisible to the naked eye in natural light. Without these lights, you cannot properly assess the paint before correction or verify the results after.
Temperature and humidity also matter for paint correction. Machine polishing generates heat, and the compounds used have specific working temperatures where they perform best. A hot driveway in July or a cold garage in January creates inconsistent results. Our shop maintains conditions that allow the products and the polisher to work the way they were designed to.
Ceramic coating application is even more dependent on environment. Professional ceramic coatings cure through a chemical reaction that is sensitive to temperature and humidity.
Too hot, and the coating flashes too quickly, creating high spots and uneven application. Too cold, and the bonding process slows down or fails entirely. Too humid, and moisture interferes with the cure.
Our 5-Year Flagship Protection and 3-Year Premium Protection both require a 72-hour in-shop stay. This gives us full control over the environment from paint correction through coating application, curing, and final inspection. The results would not be the same in an uncontrolled setting, and we are not willing to put our name on work that does not meet our standard.
Why Does Paint Correction Need Controlled Lighting?
This is worth explaining in detail because it is the single biggest difference between mobile and shop work for paint services.
Clear coat defects like swirl marks, holograms, and marring are not always visible in normal daylight or under standard overhead lighting. They show up under specific angles of intense, focused light. In a shop setting, we use handheld LED inspection lights and overhead panel lights to evaluate every square inch of every panel.
When you correct paint, you are working at a microscopic level. Removing too little leaves defects behind. Removing too much thins the clear coat unnecessarily. The only way to dial in the right approach for each panel is to see exactly what you are working with under proper lighting, then verify the results under the same lighting after each pass.
In a driveway, the sun moves, clouds come and go, and the angle of light changes constantly. You cannot reliably assess paint condition or verify correction results in that environment. A detailer working outside is essentially working without the most important tool in the process.
Is Mobile Detailing More Expensive or Less Expensive?
This is a fair question, and the answer varies by market. At Bryan Car Care, our mobile service pricing is straightforward. There is a small trip fee that varies based on distance from our Post Falls shop, but the service pricing itself is the same whether we come to you or you come to us.
The trip fee covers fuel, travel time, and the logistics of bringing a full mobile setup to your location. For clients in Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene, the fee is minimal. For clients farther out in the service area, the fee scales with distance.
Shop-based services do not carry a trip fee, and they often run more efficiently because everything we need is within arm's reach. For maintenance services like interior or exterior detailing, the total cost difference between mobile and shop is small enough that convenience should drive your decision.
For paint correction and protection services, the shop is the only option. The pricing for those services reflects the 72-hour process, the controlled environment, and the documentation package that comes with every Protection Plan.
How Do I Decide Between Mobile and Shop?
Here is a simple framework.
Go mobile if you need an interior detail, exterior detail, or full detail and want the convenience of having us come to your location. Mobile works great for regular maintenance and seasonal resets.
Come to the shop if your vehicle needs paint correction, ceramic coating, or any Protection Plan. Also consider the shop if weather conditions are not ideal for outdoor work or if you want the fastest possible turnaround.
Either works if you need a full detail during mild weather and have a shaded, flat area for us to work in.
What About Regulars Who Use Both?
Many of our best clients use a combination of mobile and shop services. They bring the vehicle to our shop once for a Protection Plan, then schedule mobile maintenance details throughout the year to keep everything looking fresh between professional visits.
This approach makes a lot of sense for busy professionals in the Coeur d'Alene and Spokane Valley area who do not have time to drop off and pick up their vehicle for routine maintenance. We handle everything at their home or office while they go about their day.
