Why Does Ceramic Coating Cost What It Costs?

April 21, 2026 · Joel Bryan

TL;DR: Professional ceramic coating prices vary because the product, process, and warranty behind each service are different. A $1,200 coating and a $3,395 coating are not the same service. Here is what actually goes into the cost at Bryan Car Care.

People see ceramic coating prices ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand and naturally wonder what accounts for the difference. It is a fair question and one that deserves a straightforward answer.

The Product Makes a Difference

Most ceramic coatings on the market use SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) chemistry. SiO2 coatings form a hard resin layer on top of the paint that provides UV protection, chemical resistance, and hydrophobic properties. They work, but they sit on the surface rather than becoming part of the paint. Over time, environmental exposure breaks down the resin. Most SiO2 coatings need a topper or refresher every one to two years.

Bryan Car Care uses Opti-Coat, which is built on SiC (Silicon Carbide) chemistry. SiC permanently bonds to clear coat through chemical crosslinking. It becomes part of the paint structure rather than a sacrificial layer. No toppers, no boosters, no annual refreshers. Opti-Coat was the first ceramic coating released in North America and has been manufactured in Memphis, TN since 2001. It was developed by Dr. David Ghodoussi, a polymer chemist with a PhD from Oregon State University and over 12 years in automotive paint R&D.

SiC products cost more than SiO2 products. That cost difference is built into the price.

Paint Correction Is Included

Ceramic coating locks in whatever is underneath. If swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation are trapped beneath the coating, they become permanent. That is why every Bryan Car Care protection package includes full multi-stage paint correction before a single layer of coating is applied.

Our paint correction is not a single-step polish. We do not cap correction at a set number of passes or a percentage of defect removal. Correction continues until the paint meets our standard, regardless of how long that takes.

Many shops charge separately for paint correction or skip it entirely. When a coating is priced at $1,200, ask what the paint looks like before the coating goes on. If correction is not included or limited to a quick one-step polish, the coating is locking in whatever imperfections remain.

72 Hours, Not 12

Bryan Car Care's protection packages require a 72-hour in-shop stay. Drop off in the morning, pick up exactly three days later.

Why 72 hours?

  • Day 1 is interior detail, exterior decontamination, and multi-stage paint correction
  • Day 2 is ceramic coating application, one panel at a time, with cure time between each layer
  • Day 3 is final inspection under dedicated lighting, documentation, and CARFAX registration

SiC ceramic coatings need specific temperature, humidity, and dust-free conditions to cure and bond correctly. Rushing the application or curing in an uncontrolled environment compromises adhesion and long-term durability.

A same-day or next-day ceramic coating is a different process. That difference in time is a difference in outcome.

Documentation and Accountability

Every protection package at Bryan Car Care includes CARFAX registration, a digital inspection report with before-and-after photos, and warranty registration directly with the manufacturer. No other detailer in the Coeur d'Alene or Spokane area documents ceramic coating work on CARFAX.

CARFAX registration creates a verifiable, permanent record on your vehicle's history. It documents the professional installation for any future buyer to see. That documentation adds measurable resale value.

The Warranty Is Manufacturer-Backed

This is where the price difference becomes most clear. Bryan Car Care's ceramic coating warranties are issued by the company that manufactured the coating, Opti-Coat LLC. Not by a third-party insurance company. Not by the installing shop alone.

Our 7-Year Protection Package includes a manufacturer-backed warranty with $5,000 per claim coverage. No annual maintenance required. Our Lifetime Protection Package includes the same $5,000 per claim coverage with a lifetime warranty option.

Both warranties are registered in Opti-Coat's national database. You receive a confirmation email directly from the manufacturer. If you move or the shop closes, any authorized Opti-Coat installer in the US and Canada can service the warranty.

A $1,200 coating might come with a shop warranty. If that shop closes, the warranty goes with it. A manufacturer-backed warranty is a fundamentally different product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is your ceramic coating more expensive than other shops in the area?

The product, process, and warranty are different. We use Opti-Coat SiC chemistry (not SiO2), include full multi-stage paint correction (not single-step), apply over 72 hours in a controlled environment (not same-day), and back every installation with a manufacturer warranty from Opti-Coat LLC with $5,000 per claim coverage.

Is a cheaper ceramic coating worth it?

SiO2 ceramic coatings are a real improvement over wax and sealant. If your budget does not allow for a professional SiC coating, an SiO2 coating is still better than leaving your paint unprotected. The tradeoff is durability, bonding quality, and warranty coverage.
