What Happens During a 72-Hour Ceramic Coating Installation (Step by Step)

March 22, 2026 · Joel Bryan

When we tell people that their vehicle will be in our shop for 72 hours, the first question is always the same. Why does it take three full days?

The short answer is that doing ceramic coating right requires time that most shops are not willing to invest. The long answer is what this post is about.

At Bryan Car Care in Post Falls, every Protection Plan follows the same 72-hour process. Whether it is a daily driver or a six-figure exotic, the steps are the same. The attention to detail does not change based on the price tag.

Here is exactly what happens from the moment you drop off your vehicle to the moment you pick it up.

What Happens Before Day 1?

Every Protection Plan starts with an in-person consultation at our shop. We walk around the vehicle together, check the paint condition under proper lighting, and talk through your goals.

Some vehicles have heavy swirl marks from automated car washes. Others have orange peel from the factory. A few come in with rock chips or scratches that need to be addressed before any coating goes on.

This consultation lets us give you an accurate estimate and set clear expectations about what the finished product will look like. There are no surprises on delivery day because we have already talked through everything upfront.

Once you approve the plan, we schedule a three-day window for your vehicle. You drop it off in the morning on Day 1 and pick it up on the morning of Day 4.

What Happens on Day 1 of the Ceramic Coating Process?

Day 1 is all about preparation. This is the longest and most labor-intensive day of the process, and it is where most shops cut corners to save time.

The vehicle starts with a full foam pre-wash to loosen surface contamination. After the pre-wash, we do a thorough hand wash using proper two-bucket technique with grit guards. Every panel, every crevice, every trim piece gets attention. The wheels and wheel wells are cleaned separately with dedicated brushes and products.

After the wash comes chemical decontamination. We apply an iron fallout remover to dissolve embedded metallic particles from brake dust and road debris. Then we clay bar the entire vehicle to remove any remaining bonded contamination. At this point, the paint is as clean as it can possibly get.

Next comes the complete interior detail. While the exterior is drying and being prepped for paint correction, we tackle the full cabin. Seats, carpets, dashboard, door panels, glass, and every surface gets cleaned, conditioned, and reset. The interior is finished before we move to the most critical exterior step.

The final phase of Day 1 is paint correction. This is the step that transforms the vehicle's appearance. Using a combination of cutting compounds, polishing compounds, and machine polishers, we remove swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation, and other defects from the clear coat.

Paint correction is measured in stages. A single-stage correction addresses light defects. A multi-stage correction goes deeper to remove heavier marring.

Our 5-Year Flagship Protection includes full multi-stage paint correction. The 3-Year Premium Protection also includes professional paint correction tailored to the vehicle's condition. If you are curious about paint correction as a standalone service, check out our Paint Enhancement page.

Paint correction requires controlled lighting to see defects accurately. This is one of the main reasons it cannot be done mobile or outdoors. We use LED inspection lights and panel-by-panel evaluation to ensure every surface meets our standard before any coating is applied.

What Happens on Day 2 When the Ceramic Coating Goes On?

Day 2 is application day. The paint has been corrected, the surface is pristine, and the environment in our shop is controlled for temperature and humidity. Both of these factors affect how ceramic coating bonds and cures.

Before any coating is applied, the entire vehicle gets a panel wipe with an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) solution. This removes any polishing oils or residue from the correction step and ensures the ceramic has a perfectly clean surface to bond to.

The ceramic coating is then applied one panel at a time. A small amount of product is applied to an applicator pad, spread evenly across the surface, and then leveled off after the appropriate flash time. Flash time varies depending on temperature and humidity, which is why a controlled environment matters so much.

For the 5-Year Flagship Protection, we apply four layers of ceramic coating. Each layer needs cure time before the next layer can go on. This is not a process you can rush. Applying the next layer too soon compromises the bond. Applying it too late can cause issues with adhesion between layers.

The wheels, calipers, glass, and trim also receive dedicated ceramic protection products formulated for each surface. The coating on wheels and calipers is especially important in North Idaho, where road salt and brake dust create aggressive contamination during winter months.

By the end of Day 2, the entire vehicle is coated and beginning its initial cure in our climate-controlled shop. The vehicle stays untouched overnight to allow the coating to begin hardening.

What Happens on Day 3 Before Delivery?

Day 3 is final inspection and documentation day. The coating has had overnight cure time, and we do a complete walk-around under our inspection lights to check every panel, every edge, and every transition point.

We are looking for high spots, uneven application, missed areas, or any defects in the coating layer. If anything does not meet our standard, we address it before the vehicle leaves the shop. This inspection process is why we build in the third day. Catching and correcting issues before delivery is far better than discovering them after the fact.

Once the inspection is complete, we move to documentation. Every Protection Plan at Bryan Car Care includes a digital inspection report with before-and-after photos. This report documents the paint condition at intake, the correction work performed, and the final result after coating.

We also register the Protection Plan on CARFAX. This is a step no other detailer in the Coeur d'Alene or Spokane area takes. The CARFAX registration creates a permanent, verifiable record that the vehicle has professional paint protection.

For the 5-Year Flagship Protection, we also provide a transferable warranty certificate that adds real documented value at resale.

The vehicle is ready for pickup the morning of Day 4. We do a final delivery walkthrough with you so you can see the results under proper lighting and ask any questions about care and maintenance going forward.

Why Does the 72-Hour Process Matter?

The reason we invest three full days in every Protection Plan is simple. Rushing any part of this process produces an inferior result.

Paint correction done too fast leaves defects behind. Ceramic layers applied without proper cure time will not bond correctly. Inspections skipped in the name of speed lead to problems down the road.

We have built our reputation in Post Falls and the surrounding area on doing things the right way, every time. Our 100% satisfaction guarantee backs that up. When you pick up your vehicle after 72 hours, you will see exactly why the process takes the time it does.
